I've been saying this since high school:
Vote with your wallet!
I remember a conversation in High School with my lifelong friend, Bill Coleman, where he was frustrated about something, and I said, "Well, if you don't like it, vote with your wallet and shop somewhere else." It was one of those casual bits of teenage expression that stuck with me, and decades later, I still believe it's one of the most powerful tools we have.

Every purchase is a vote. Every dollar you spend is a signal about what you want to see more of in the world. You're not just buying a product or service. You're funding the continuation of that business, that approach, those values.
It sounds simple because it is. But simple doesn't mean easy, and it definitely doesn't mean unimportant.
Voting for the Books and Content You Want to See
This principle matters everywhere, but it's especially important when it comes to books and content. If you love a particular author's work, buy their books. If you want to see more thoughtful, well-researched journalism, subscribe to publications that deliver it. If you appreciate a podcast that makes you think, laugh, or learn something new, support it however you can.
The content we consume shapes our thinking, our culture, and our conversations. When you buy books and content you value, you're not just supporting the creators behind them. You're signaling to the market that this kind of work matters. You're helping ensure there's more of it in the future.
The people creating that content are working hard to bring something meaningful into the world. They're often doing it against tough odds, in an industry that doesn't always reward quality or depth. Your support and your purchases matter more than you might think.
A Small Change That Makes a Big Difference
Let me get specific, because general principles are nice, but action is what counts.
I love my local bookstore. The staff at Labyrinth Books in Princeton are great people and always helpful. I want that store to stick around. So when I need a book, I shop there.
Don't get me wrong: I appreciate Amazon. I shop there when I must, especially for products I can't easily find locally or at all. Amazon is a useful tool. But when I have a choice, I choose local.
And lately, given my busy lifestyle, I've been listening to audiobooks on the go. Instead of buying them on Audible, I use Libro.fm. When you sign up for Libro.fm, you pick a local independent bookstore to receive a portion of the proceeds from your purchases. Mine is Labyrinth Books. Every audiobook I buy supports them.
It's a tiny behavior change. Same convenience, same listening experience, but my dollars go somewhere I actually want them to go.
(And no, I'm not paid by anyone to say this. I have no relationship with Amazon or Libro.fm beyond being a customer. This is just me telling you what I do and why.)
Take a Minute and Think About It
So here's my ask: take a minute and think about where your money is going.
What do you value? What do you want to see more of in the world? Are your purchasing habits aligned with those values?
If you love indie bookstores, are you shopping there? If you want to support authors directly, are you buying books in ways that benefit them? If you care about independent media, are you subscribing or contributing?
You don't have to overhaul your entire life. Start small. Pick one thing. Maybe it's signing up for Libro.fm and choosing a local bookstore. Maybe it's buying your next book from an independent shop instead of clicking the default Amazon link. Maybe it's subscribing to a publication you've been reading for free.
Small decisions add up. And when enough people make those small decisions, they create real change.
Being Helpful Means Supporting What Helps
At Metamorphosis, our mission is simple: be helpful. That means helping authors succeed, yes. But it also means being thoughtful about the ecosystem we're all part of. Supporting local bookstores, independent publishers, and the creators doing great work, those aren't just nice-to-haves. They're essential to a healthy, vibrant literary culture.
Your wallet is powerful. Use it to vote for what you want to see more of.
Take Action:
